Rotterdam Hotels, Rotterdam Flights and Rotterdam Breaks
If you are planning a Rotterdam break and are looking for a Rotterdam hotel or apartment, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Europe’s greatest port city – Rotterdam, on the Rhine river’s vast delta – may not sound like a promising destination but actually has much to offer, attracting around 4 million visitors each year to a wide variety of attractions. It is the cosmopolitan second city of the Netherlands, divided by the New Maas River with the centre on the north bank.
The port now stretches from the old city towards the North Sea for some 40km [20 miles]. The original historic harbour is part of the town centre, but has long been eclipsed by new development, with further port expansion currently under way. Much of the area is on reclaimed land behind dykes. A gritty working city that was almost completely destroyed at the beginning of World War II, Rotterdam nonetheless has some impressive industrial heritage, notably bridges, tunnels and canals. But it also has a variety of museums, an internationally famous orchestra and many theatres. In fact, it is an important culture centre, sharing the accolade of European Capital of Culture with Porto in 2001. This is in part due to strenuous efforts to regenerate the city, with some striking modern architecture, many new festivals and a focus on better shopping and nightlife.
Visit the Linjbaan pedestrian shopping centre, and sample some of the speciality restaurants that abound. There is plenty to do and see in Rotterdam. As well as museums [especially maritime] there’s an excellent zoo that includes Oceanium, a fascinating sea aquarium with a scary shark tunnel. But perhaps the city’s special quality is the striking modern architecture made possible by post-war reconstruction. Rotterdam has the tallest office and residential buildings in the Netherlands, and is proud of striking landmarks like the 186m [610ft] tall Euromast and soaring cable-stay Erasmus Bridge.
Shopping in Rotterdam: Visit the area between Kruiskade and Van Oldenbarneveltstraat if you are a fashion enthusiast. You can choose from stylish boutiques and trendy stores - but there is a selection of gift shops and cafes amongst them. The more exclusive shops can be found just past Beurstraverse and if you are looking for something extra special then Niewe Binneweg and Witte de Withstraat are for you - even visit the many museums and galleries in the area.
Eating out in Rotterdam: There are many reasonably priced restaurants in Rotterdam - from the simple pub to a trendy restaurant [like the Westelijk Handelsterrein - one of Rotterdam's finest restaurants] you will find somewhere to suit your budget.
