The Empire State Building is New York's best known building and stands at 381m [1250ft], with 102 stories and 73 elevators. The classic King Kong film of 1933, made this building even more famous than it already was and has also featured in many other films.
Although the building has been stripped of it's title of the World's tallest building [which it held for 40 years], it is a symbol of New York itself and is visited by 2 million people every year. To build the skyscraper, the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on 5th avenue was demolished. Demolition od the hotel started in March 1930 and the construction of the building was completed in 14 months on 14th May 1931.
The Empire State Building has one of the most popular outdoor observatories in the world, having been visited by over 110 million people. The 86th floor observation deck offers impressive 360-degree views of the city. There are also a list of shops, restaurants ans services within the building, including jewelers, perfumeries, newstands and money exchange services. There are Italian restaurants, brewerys and Ice cream parlours, so there is something to meet every visitors fancy.
