Warsaw Hotels, Warsaw City Breaks and Warsaw Flights:
Poland’s capital is everything you expect from a European city. Warsaw has reclaimed every aspect of its history, from its Catholicism and proud monarchism to the trauma of it’s suffering during World War II and the lean years of the Soviet era. Its new skyline of soaring towers is a metaphor of the city’s fundamental energy, good sense and wry humour: instead of tearing down the monumental Palace of Culture and Science [Stalin’s compulsory gift, and a triumph of socialist realism in granite and grossness] dominating its ancient heart, the city turned into a throbbing centre for entertainment and incorporated it into its future.
Warsaw is in any case a miracle. 86 per cent of its buildings were destroyed in World War II, and rebuilt exactly as they were, restoring both the city’s history and its soul. The inner city [Srodmiescie] contains both the beautiful Old Town [Stare miasto] of ancient palaces, squares and cobbled streets of 17th and 18th century houses, and the clunky blocks of Stalinist mauso-architecture round Constitution Square. Deprived of the threat they once implied, people begun to enjoy them as time capsules.
Ready humour and bossy charm, driven by the youthful energy of a city in which a fifth of its residence are under twenty years old, make Warsaw a lot of restless fun. It has already shaken off the drab of its former reputation, along with the edgy, and frankly, dangerous outlaw years that briefly replaced it. The pace of change is getting faster. The city is claiming its rightful place among the great capitals, and doing so with intelligence, style and considerable grace.
