Edinburgh Hotels, Edinburgh Flights and Edinburgh City Breaks
In the eternal rivalry between Scotland’s two greatest cities, Edinburgh in the elegant east claims cultural superiority over Glasgow in the Wild West. The nation’s capital and seat of the Scottish Parliament sits beside the Firth of Forth. This dramatic city has a rugged location and huge collection of wonderful old buildings, The Old and New Town Districts are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting some thirteen million visitors a year, who rarely feel the need to stray far from the historic centre into the wider city beyond.
As a centre of the 18th century Age of Enlightenment, Edinburgh was nicknamed ‘Athens of the North’, also earning the soubriquet Auld Reekie for its belching chimneys and insanitary living conditions. Historic Edinburgh is divided by Princes Street Gardens, reclaimed in the early 19th century from boggy land that was once a finger of the loch.
To one side Edinburgh Castle perches on its volcanic crag, with the Old Town trailing down the ridge. The medieval plan is preserved and many buildings dare from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Royal Mile leads away from the castle. There are market squares and squares surrounding major structures such as St Giles Cathedral, begun in the 12th century. The Law Courts, McEwan Hall, Surgeons’ Hall and Royal Museum of Scotland are also noteworthy.
On the other side of Princes Gardens in the New Town, an 18th century response to over crowding in the constricted Old Town. It started life to a grid design, around George Street, Princes Street and Queen Street, but soon expanded in a less structured manner to become a splendid example of Georgian architecture and planning. Robert Adam’s Charlotte Square is considered by many to be the finest Georgian square in the world. It contains Bute House, the residence of Scotland’s First Minister.
