Cadiz City Breaks and Cadiz Hotels:
A major port in south-western Spain, Cadiz is said to be the second-oldest continuously inhabited city in Western Europe, since settlement by Phoenicians around the 10th century BC. The city has an unusual location – on a narrow island jutting out into the Bay of Cadiz, beyond another island that connects to the mainland. When approached from the sea, the ancient city presents a dramatic picture that Sir Francis Drake would still recognise from his hostile visit in 1587, when he torched part of the Spanish fleet in the harbour [though failing to take the fortified town].
The oldest part, within the remains of medieval walls, is called Casco Antiguo [Old City] – a warren of ancient quarters [barrios], including La vina, Santa Maria and El Populo. Here, winding alleys connect with compact squares. Newer parts of the city have wide avenues and grander buildings, though further development is constrained by its physical location.
Notable buildings include the Landmark Cathedral with its golden cupola, that took more than a century to build, starting in 1776, and this delay resulted in a mixture of architectural styles. The late Victorian Grand Theatre is built in a Moorish revival style that seems appropriate – Cadiz as a whole has a slightly Moorish feel. The old Town Hall is a fine neo-classical structure started in the early 19th century. The Tavira Tower is a reminder of the time when hundreds like it existed, from which merchants watched the sea for the return of their richly laden ships.
Cadiz Carnival, centred around Shrove Tuesday, is the people’s fiesta, when everyone dons masks and fancy dress and has a riotous time. This is definitely the most dazzling carnival in mainland Spain, famous for amusing figures, satirical songs and general mayhem.
