Spanish City Breaks offers

Granada City Breaks, Granada Holidays and Granada Hotels:

Granada is a distinctive city at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Andalucia and has been a settlement since the dawn of time, but is forever associated with the period when it was under Moorish rule [8th to 15th centuries, in 1942 it became the last enclave to be retaken by the Catholic Spanish monarchy]. The reason may be summarised in two words – the Alhambra. This amazing hilltop palace and fortress complex above the city, begun in the 13th century, tells the story of the Moorish presence in Southern Spain – arriving as warlike conquerors and departing as sophisticated aesthetes. The Alhambra is stunning – though constantly being altered and abused in subsequent centuries, it remains an awe-inspiring monument to the distinctive local brand of Islamic culture and craftsmanship that reached incomparable heights in Granada.

The Alhambra shares the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site with two more wonderful legacies of the long-lasting Moorish presence – the nearby Palace of Generalife [summer residence of the Moorish rulers] and the old casbah of Albaicin, a maze of narrow streets with whitewashed houses and a wonderful view of the Alhambra on the facing hill from St Salvador’s Church which – like so many in the city – is built on the site of an earlier mosque. Granada has the largest extant collection of Moorish buildings in Europe, and parts of those that have gone were frequently incorporated into structures that replaced them and are still obvious today. Even the acequias that feed the Arab fountains, wells and baths are original.

A large student population ensures that Granada is a lively place by day and night, with plenty of cafes, bars and clubs – but paradoxically the Moorish capital of southern Spain is quieter in the holidays when they all go home.

Location of Granada:
In the southeast of the Iberian peninsula, in the province of Andalaucia, 40 miles from the coast of Motril, 80 miles southeast of Cordoba, 150 miles eash of Seville and 10 miles east of the airport.

Shopping in Granada:
Granada offers a variety of shopping experiences, from lively, modern streets to quiet alleys with workshops selling local handicrafts; however, most prices are quite high compared with the UK. The pedestrianised Calle de los Mesones, with its designer shops and buskers, is a real treat to wander down in the evening; a good selection of handicrafts can be found in and around Plaza Nueva, including hand-made guitars, weaving, basketry, leather goods, ornate Moorish-style lamps and ceramics; Plaza Bib-Rambla has a selection of market stalls selling mainly flowers.

Eating out in Granada:
The principal entertainment in Granada, though not an outstanding restaurant town by any stretch of the imagination. Probably the most interesting option is the local version of the pub crawl – walking from one tapas bar to the next, taking in the atmosphere and the snacks. Mediocre Chinese restaurants and pizzerias abound, and there is an abundance of cafes surrounding the squares. More upmarket dining can be found in some hotels, especially near the Alhambra, although prices can be steep. Some of the best value-for-money dining can be had at the country inns or "ventas" found in the villages around the fringes of the city.
