Huelva Holidays and Hotels in Huelva
If you are looking for a holiday hotel, rural holiday, or apartment in Huelva, the following information may help by giving you an overview.
Huelva borders Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean and is located in in the west of Andalucia. Huelva also borders and province of Badajos in the north and Seville and Cadiz in the east. The province of Huelva is located on the mouth of the Odiel and Tinto estuary and has been an important port since the Phoenicians established it as a major trading post. In the 15th century local sailors were recruited by Christopher Columbus for his voyage when he discovered the Americas. Both on his departure and return he prayed to the patron saint of Huelva at the Santuario de Nuestra Senora la Virgen de la Cinta and today he is commemorated in the Monumento a Colon. At the monastery of La Rabida, a few kilometres from Huelva, Friar Juan Perez and Friar Antonio de Marchena promoted Columbus' plans for his voyage and he stayed there until just before he set off.

Huelva was badly damaged in 1755 by the Lisbon earthquake and now lacks the architectural splendour of Seville [it's neighbouring province]. The hub of Huelva today is the palm-lined square, the Plaza de la Monjas, close to the pedestrianised shopping district, along the streets of Concepcion to Berdigon.
The mountain climate is warm and mild, and on the coast it is perfect for enjoying the sun and the sea all year round.
There are 2 main types of cuisine in Huelva. The first is seafood-based with mackeral, sea bass, grouper, tuna, prawns, langoustines and cockles. Enjoy dishes such as squid prepared in a whole range of styles, skate with red pepper, swordfish with viniagrette or tuna belly. The second is inland-based with delicious pork-based produce and delicious wild mushrooms making this excellent cuisine justly famous.
Alajar
Alajar is one of the prettiest villages in the province of Huelva and is overlooked by the towering Pena de Arias Montano, a dramatic rocky outcrop with a church and belfry. From the Pena is a stunning view of Alajar, its fields of olive trees and the gently undulating plant south of the Sierra.
The houses in Alajar huddle around a tiny square and its narrow cobbled streets radiate outwards. The village has a large church, the 16th century Iglesia de San Marcos. The Pena de Arias Montano can be crowded at weekends and holidays, but is a tranquil place during the week with superb views, abundant springs and good picnic spots under its cork oaks.
The Ermita de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles was built on the site of a medieval temple and has had several additions, most notably in the 16th, 18th and 20th centuries. It has a wonderful whitewashed belfy set on the edge of the cliff away from the church. There is also a small visitors' centre with information about the life of Arias Montano. On September 8 there is a colourful pilgrimage here, when the surrounding villagers come on foot and horseback, with decorated carts, for a day of drinking, eating and singing.
