Segovia City Breaks, Segovia Hotels and Segovia Flights:
The historic heart of Segovia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is easy to see why. This compact hill-top city is old Spain and Castille at its very best, with narrow pedestrian streets, intriguing alleys rich with the aromas of regional cooking and Europe’s highest concentration of Romanesque churches. Around it all is a city wall with towers and gates, bordered by two rivers and a girdle of trees offering peaceful, shaded walks. And that’s before mentioning the impressive Alcazar castle and famous aqueduct.
There is a place to soak up the atmosphere of historic Spain. The elongated Alcazar, rising from its rocky crag above the city and looking almost like a giant stone ship, sits on Roman and Moorish foundations. It was built, extended, altered and restored over many centuries of use successively as royal residence, prison and artillery school. Today, it is one of the most popular historical sights in Spain.
Another is the astonishing double-arched Roman aqueduct, rising to a height of 28.5 m [93.5 feet] in the pedestrianised Azoguejo Square, where it is at its most impressive – though this is but the climax to an ingenious irrigation system stretching into the mountains that still carries water today.
Segovia has wonderful churches. The late Gothic Cathedral with its dominant tower stands at the city’s highest point, and has a richly decorated interior. The Church of St Martin is surrounded beautiful atrium and has a 12th century marble relief of its saints. San Juan de los Caballeros with its striking interior carving was the church of choice for Segovia’s noble families.
Luckily, there are dozens of pavement cafes, restaurants and interesting shops for those who need a break from sightseeing, which can be quite exhausting in this most enchanting of cities.

Eating our in Segovia:Segovia has lots of restaurants, but there is no doubt that the place to eat is Meson de Candido, under the arches of the aqueduct. It is not cheap, but it is good value for money and if you only intend to splash out on one meal while you are in Spain, this would be a good place to do it. Segovia's speciality is Castilian roast meats, especially lechazo, suckling lamb, and even more so, cochinillo suckling pig, slow-roasted until you can cut it with a plate. Other Segovian dishes of interest include sopa castellana, a garlic and bread soup widely available in Spain but at its best here, judias con liebre, white beans stewed with hare, or Segovian trucha, trout. Less expectedly, Segovian cuisine also includes some interesting desserts, particularly a thing called ponche segoviano which will make you feel as if your fillings were dropping out.
In terms of wine, Old Castile has two important denominaciones de origen which include a part of Segovia. Rueda normally denotes a white wine, often light and fresh to drink. Ribera del Duero produces wines of all colours, but the best are reds, which may be drunk young or mature, in which case they are fairly heavy. Another wine-producing place in Segovia is Valtiendas, known for its reds.
