Bilbao City Breaks and Bilbao Hotels:
Bilbao is the centre of Basque industry and Spain's leading commercial port, yet it has many cultural attractions worth visiting. In the city's old quarter
Casco Viejo the Museo Arqueologico, Etnografico e Historico Vasco displays Basque art and folk artifacts, which in the newer town, the Museo de Bellas Artes is one of Spain's best art museums.
The jewel in Bilbao's cultural crown is the Museo Guggenheim which has a superb collection of modern and contemporary art.
The city is well served with beaches along the mouth of the estuary and around both headlands. The metro means it's easier to reach the beaches on the east bank, such as those at Sopelana, including the nudist Playa de Barinatxe, and Plentizia which is out to the north of the city, which is generally cleaner and not quite so crowded. Getxo has a pretty old quarter with white houses and green-pained doors and an impressive waterfront promenade fringed with private mansions belonging to Bilbao's milliionaire set.
Bilbao is definitely one of those cities where the most enjoyable way to eat is to move from bar to bar, snacking on pintxos. The city can be very lively at night - and totally wild during the August fiesta, with scores of open-air bars, live music and impromptu dancing everywhere, and a truly festive atmosphere. The Casco Viejo has most of the interesting placed to eat and drink, with almost wall-to-wall placed on Calle Santa Maria and Calle Barrencalle Barrena.
