Madrid City Breaks, Madrid Hotels and Madrid Flights:

Located on the river Manzanares, between the Sierra de Guadarrama Mountains and the fluvial river basins, Madrid - Spain’s capital city - is considered to be the main financial, cultural and political centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Growing quickly, on the orders of Philip II, from a little known 16th century backwater, the city’s grand architecture is surprisingly coherent. The walls of the easily accessible, compact old town only fell in 1860.

Central Districts in Madrid:

If you are carrying out a search for accommodation in Madrid on the left of this page, the following list will help you to select a more central hotel. The list is in order of distance from the centre:
Plaza de Espana - Palacio Real
Puerta del Sol - Plaza Mayor
Museo del Prado - Retiro
Gran Via
Salamanca - Serrano
Santiago Bernabeu - Castellana
Atocha
Arturo Soria
Moncloa - Argueles
Plaza Castilla - Chamartin
Ventas - Avenida America
Arganzuela
Carabanchel
Chuela - Fuencarral
Usera
Vallecas
Las Tablas

The list below shows the remaining districts of Madrid which are found in the

Renowned for its golden triangle of art, located along the Paseo del Prado, Madrid is one of Europe’s main art-lovers’ top destinations. The triangle comprises three museums: the Prado Museum, which houses works by both Velazquez and Goya; the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, holding a largely private collection of the Reina Sofia, which famously won back Picasso’s masterpiece, Guernica, from New York.

Aside from its abundant cultural and historical wealth, the city also possesses a very modern infrastructure and is equally famous for its youthful, heady atmosphere. Bustling cafes overflow into market places and square, tapas bars spattered around every street corner entice hungry visitors, and the vibrant nightlife can see traffic jams well into the early morning.

Wander through the Puerta del Sol square and see the famous clock - the bells bring in the new year, or have a pre-dinner drink in the neighbouring Plaza Mayor whilst imagining both the Spanish Inquisition and the bullfighting that once took place within its walls.

Madrid’s festivities on patron saint days are a particular experience not to be missed, but be sure to book a bed in advance as the city hotels can be full up months beforehand.

Shopping in Madrid:
Virtually everything is available, most items markedly more expensive than in the UK. A generous range of typically Spanish goods – largely concentrated around Plaza Major – in the form of handicrafts, leatherwork, handmade guitars, ceramics, foodstuffs, wine and spirits. The big "Rastro" flea market, which takes place daily but is best on Sundays, is a bargain-seeker's delight. Good choice of antique shops around the Rastro and on Jorge Juan, Claudio Coello and Velazquez streets.

Eating out in Madrid:
Huge selection of national and international restaurants in all price categories. Spanish specialities from around the country include cuisine from Galicia, Asturias and the Basque region. Vast choice of seafood, including Valencian paella, and plentiful tapas bars. Local dishes to try include cocido madrileno (meat and chick-pea stew), callos (tripe) and sopa de ajo (garlic soup). International cuisine includes Chinese, Italian, French, Moroccan, German, Russian, Mexican and Cuban. Bear in mind that restaurants keep late dining hours with many not opening until 8 or 9 o'clock.
