Parque del Retiro

The Parque del Retiro is 1.2sq km of manicured gardens, lakes, pavilions and shady woodland. It was once the garden of the Palacio Real del Buen Retiro and is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city of Madrid.

At the centre is a large lake which has a few cafes. There are also boats to hire.

At the southern end of the park you can see the Angel Caido - Fallen Angel - which is one of only 3 monuments to be found in the world to Satan, caught midway in his fall from Paradise. The pavilions are now used for the Reina Sofia's art exhibitions.
