The vast, cobbled Plaza Mayor was built in the 15th century as a market square and was partly built by Philip II [1556-1598] when he made Madrid his capital. Bullfights, carnivals and autos-da-fe [the burning of heretics] are part of its history. The square is livliest at the end of a summer afternoon or during the build-up to Christmas.
