Zaragoza Breaks, Zaragoza Hotels and Zaragoza Flights:
Zaragoza, also called Saragossa in English, is the capital city of the Zaragoza Province and the community of Aragon, Spain. Zaragoza is situated on the Ebro River and its tributaries, the Huerva and Gallego, near the centre of the region in a valley with a variety of landscapes ranging from desert to thick forest, meadows and mountains.
The city of Zaragoza is famous for its folklore, a renowned local gastronomy and landmarks such as the Basilica del Pilar, La Seo Cathedral and the Aljaferia Palace. Together with the La Seo Cathedral and the Aljaferia Palace, several other buildings form part of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Aswell as the landmarks and stunning architecture Zaragoza hosts The Fiestas del Pilar, one of the most celebrated festivals in Spain. Fiestas del Pilar is an annual festuval celebrated in honour of the patron saint of Zaragoza, the Virgen del Pilar (or Virgin Mary of the Pilar). Taking place the week of the 12th of October, the festival usually starts the weekend before the 12th and lasts until the following Sunday - therefore they last around 10 days each year! In this festival there are a wide variety of events organized by the City Hall as well as other private companies and organizations who prepare their own shows, contests and other activities.
The old centre of Zaragoza is bordered to the north by the Ebro River and on the other sides by a loop of broad streets; bisecting it is the Avenida de César Augusto, leading in from the old city gate, Puerta del Carmen. With the exception of the Aljaferia Palace, most other points of interest for tourists are within this loop. Backing onto the river are the two cathedrals, La Seo and the Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, flanked on their south side by Plaza del Pilar, a huge stone square which is considered to be the heart of the city.
Just south of the square, between Calle de Alfonso and Calle de Don Jaime, is an area known as El Tubo, the hub of Zaragoza's bar and nightlife scene. This leads to the Plaza de España, a central terminus for local city buses.
