Geneva City Breaks, Geneva Hotels and Geneva Flights:

Geneva is a beautiful cosmopolitan city - modern and sophisticated and boasts a good variety of museums, galleries, gardens and parks. Take a bus or mini train city tour to take in the sights, including the Jed d'Eau fountain, the Flower Clock and the grand United Nations building. Lake Geneva [Lac Leman], one of the largest lakes in Western Europe, lies on the Rhone River on the border between France and Switzerland, between the Jura Mountains and the Alps. For many years, visitors have come to marvel at the beauty of the lake, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Lord Byron and Shelley. On the shores of the Azure Lake, in the shadow of the Alps, is the city of Geneva, an historical town filled with many interesting attractions.

The nicest way to explore the lake is by boat, on one of the many steam ships, which travel up and down the shores to the towns and villages there. Services usually run from Easter through to October. One of the most famous sights of Geneva is the incredible Jet d’Eau, which spurts lake water an impressive 140m [459 ft] into the air. Once an overflow valve for a hydroelectric plant, the Jet was turned into a fountain in 1891.

As well as its wonderful scenery, the city is known for a range of diverse things, including its quality watches, knives and cutlery, its fine chocolate, cheese fondue and for being the site of several UN agencies. However, there are plenty of historical sites to occupy the visitor. Built as a base for the League of Nations, the Palais des Nations boasts an awe-inspiring Assembly Hall, interesting library and landscape grounds. It also houses a fine art collection. Also worth a visit is the medieval cathedral of St. Pierre.

Geneva boasts a wide range of museums, on subjects as diverse as ethnography, horology, the Red Cross, natural history, Voltaire, the Reformation, and modern art. The city spends around 20 per cent of its annual budget on its cultural department, so most of the museums are free.

The city is well known for its parks and gardens. The Parc des Eaux Vives is a lovely place for a stroll, with views over the lake to the UN Campus and the Palais des Nations. For those with a little more energy, there is a beach resort on the lake side just outside the city where you can swim and try out various beach and water sports.
