Buenavista del Norte [otherwise known as simply Buenavista] - as you would probably guess - is in the north of Tenerife [to the northwest to be more precise]. The ancient Teno Mountains define Tenerife's northwest tip and they are an excellent area for hiking with steep gorges and ravines carved out of the volcanic rock down to the coastline and a few accessible beaches and inviting coves where you will encounter absolure peace and quiet. The landscape here is larely treeless [most of the trees were cleared to fire sugar mills in the 16th century].
Buenavista del Norte is the largest of several towns on this part of the coast with a small collection of seafood restaurants and has become an ideal stop for hikers. It is also a district full of charming streets with a clear Andalucian influence. There is a pleasant main square where you can sit and enjoy a leisurely coffee.
There is also a lovely church - Nuestra Senora de los Remedios [Our Lady of Remedies] which has a 17th century painting of St Francis by Alonso Cano and some ornate
retablos [altar pieces].
You will also find here a lighthouse which has an unusual corkscrew shaped tower.
If you enjoy playing golf on your holiday to Tenerife, there is a large golf course on the edge of Buenavista del Norte - Buenavista Golf - which was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and is located adjacent to the spectacular cliffs.
