EL MEDANO HOLIDAYS & EL MEDANO HOTELS
If you are planning an El Medano holiday, the following information may help by giving you an overview of the resort and the surrounding area, and help you select from our range of El Medano hotels.
El Medano is located in the south of Tenerife
, within easy reach of Reina Sofia [Tenerife South] airport, just a 10-15 minute taxi ride away.
El Medano holidays are best known for sandy beaches and breezy conditions - great for windsurfing and kite-surfing. In fact, with its persistent winds, El Medano is the best windsurfing spot in Tenerife and world championships are regularly held here and is an exciting sport to watch on a windy day. Some beaches are best left to the experts, but tuition and equipment are available and you can practise in more sheltered conditions at Las Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
, and at Playa de las Americas

The small town of El Medano [a former fishing village] is a unique resort and has developed into a laid-back resort for the sporty types, and although it hasn't escaped the region's ongoing building boom, it has managed to retain a pleasant easy-going atmosphere, with the Medano Hotel
being the most popular hotel for El Medano holidays due to its unique location - jutting into the sea.
The focal point of El Medano is the Plaza Principe de Asturias where you will find a selection of restaurants, bars and cafes and is adjacent to the large main beach [awarded a Blue Flag for 2010]. A boardwalk from the centre, follows the length of the natural stretch of sand, lined with shops selling clothing and watersports paraphernalia - ideal for souvenirs of your holiday in El Medano.
El Medano is also known for its close proximity to Montana Roja [Red Mountain] which is in the centre of a nature reserve protecting a dune ecosystem. And is a striking red coloured remnant of a volcano and is approximately 170m high. The beaches in El Medano are divided by the Montana Roja. The coastline of El Medano is low-lying and rocky. An easily followed path from the western end of El Medano beach leads through this area to the summit, while another rounds the hill on the inland side and leads to a beautiful but windswept beach - Playa de la Tejita.
For a change of scenery - visit nearby Los Abrigos
. Another quiet resort with several restaurants specialising in shellfish, there is a promenade along which you can stroll and there is also a quaint harbour. Alternatively take the short taxi ride to San Isidro
where you will be able to do some shopping.
If you want to stay in El Medano you will find lots of different places to eat [although don’t expect to see anywhere selling 24 hour breakfasts!]. In the main square - Plaza Principe de Asturias - you will be able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner in a variety of restaurants. We recommend Bar Restaurante Avenida [known as Casa Fefo]. Here you can take a take outside on the terrace overlooking the sea, or inside where you will still be able to take in the view through the large windows, and select from the Canarian menu including locally caught fish. Another good restaurant is Restaurante Familiar which you will find located about 2 rows back from the front. This is a popular restaurant where you will find both international and traditional cuisine.
In the evening, take a stroll along the promenade and take a few drinks in one of the bars which remain open until midnight/1am.
So, if you are looking for a laid-back holiday, where you can relax and unwind, then El Medano may be ideal.

Cueva del Hermano Pedro - the cave of the missionary Brother Pedro is to be found at the west end of the village. Brother Pedro was a monk who hailed from the village of Vilaflor, where he was born in 1619. He was forced out of his birthplace and went to live a hermit-like existence in a cave near El Medano [close to the present airport runway], Hermano Pedro eventually emigrated to Central America where he formed the Bethlehemite order of monks/. Their missionary work was influential throughout Latin America. Hermano Pedro was canonized in 1980 and his cave has become a place of pilgrimage, with mass being celebrated there twice a year.
