A good deal higher than
Santa Cruz de Tenerife and considerably cooler and rainier, the lively university town of La Laguna was Tenerife's first major settlement and, for over 200 years, its capital. The government may have moved and the town's suburbs now blur into Santa Cruz de Tenerife, yet a La Laguna holiday remains to be break in the cultural, religious and academic centre of Tenerife and you will see a well-preserved historic centre providing a showpiece of Canarian architecture. South of here, it's the university district that is the busiest area of town, its streets buzzing with bars, cafes and bookshops.
The main monuments lie in the grid-like streets between the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora la Concepcion and the Plaza de Adelantado. If you walk up Calle Obispo Rey Redondo and back down San Agustin, you will see quite a few of La Laguna's main buildings, and can get a flavour of the town in a couple of hours. Its shady plazas, inner courtyards and the facades of colonial buildings give it a memorable atmosphere.
| One of Tenerife'e most important churches - Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion, can be found in La Laguna. Its main attractions include a magnificent 16th century coffered ceiling and a cedar pulpit. Take a look at the silver altarpiece, and the ceramic font in which defeated Guanche chieftans were baptised | |
La Laguna isn't really a tourist town, and if you visit it, you must expect Spanish ways. Sights and shops close for the siesta period, though that can be a peaceful time to wander round the streets of La Laguna. Visit the Plaza del Adelantado, a typical Canarian laurel-shaded square ... marvellous to watch the world go by. All around the edges stand imposing historic monuments in Spanish colonial style.
 | Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos This is somewhere to amuse the children on a wet day in La Laguna. There's lots of interactive displays about life, the universe, plus a planetarium. To find it, looks out for the radar equipment near the university. |
