Tenerife so remember to protect yourself from the sun.
Los Gigantes [the Giants] is named after the towering cliffs of black volcanic basalt and is a pretty resort with narrow streets and a pedestrianised zone around the church and main plaza, which is also the focal point of the town for the annual Carnival and other big events. It's an enjoyable resort for shopping and strolling, with a variety of good shops, some offering designer clothes, perfumes and traditional souvenirs as well as the usual discount stores.
 | Masca One of the most popular visits while you are in Los Gigantes is to the terraced, fertile terrain behind Los Gigantes, to see the spectacular "lost village" of Masca. Until a few years ago, this tiny place was virtually cut off from civilisation without electricity and inaccessible except by mule. Now an improved road passes through the Macizo de Teno, a region of ancient basalt buckled into ridges and deep canyons. Several restaurants along the main road offer Canarian cooking |
Boat Trips from Los Gigantes Lots of pleasure cruises depart from Los Gigantes harbour, heading into the bay in search of whales and dolphins. Other excurions promise big-game fishing, and there are fequent trips up the coast past towering black cliffs.
Centro Alfarero A small ceramics and folk museum in the village of Arguayo near Los Gigantes displays pottery made in the same style as the ancient Guanches, shaped by hand without a wheel and fired in traditional wood-fired kilns. | |
The ritzy little private marina at Los Gigantes sets the tone of the resort. Pleasure boating is a prime activity. Beaches near to Los Gigantes consist of black sand and are quite small and the one north of the marina is very attractive. The water is clear and sparkling, but can be rough, so watch for warning flags. The only beach in Los Gigantes is small, but there 2 private complexes offering pools and sun terraces just south of the marina in Los Gigantes. The larger of the two, El Laguillo is open daily from 10:30-18:30 and has an imaginative laid-out bathing area, with lakes, waterfalls and islands. The other is the nearby Oasis which is open daily from 10:00-18:00 which you may find less interesting, but it is greener. You will see a larger beach at
Playa de la Arena and
Puerto de Santiago which are within easy reach.
If you would like to take a trip to Masca which is considered as the jewel of Tenerife’s northwest, the boats sail to Masca bay from Los Gigantes. Boats to see the cliffs run from the Puerto Deportivo [sport harbour] and other boats leave for scuba diving, dolphin watching or game fishing. Some of the boats even have glass bottoms. You will also find that the port - located at the bottom of a steep hill, is Tenerife’s premier diving centre and you will find endless water activities available. The port itself has great views to the
acantilados de Los Gigantes which are sheer rocks rising beyond the beach on the northern edge of Los Gigantes. Formed from lava being squeezed under high pressure through multiple parallel cracks. This is the dramatic 800m wall of the Teno massif, where the boatless Guanche thought that the world came to an end.
One of the world’s toughest sporting events is the Atlantic Rowing Challenge which starts from Los Gigantes and 5,000km later reaches Barbados. Boats 7.3m long are rowed by 2 oarsmen. Chay Blythe started the race in 1997 which was 30 years after this 3-month trans-Atlantic crossing with John Ridgeway.
