ABOUT THE CITY OF ATLANTA:A city forever associated with the horrors of the American Civil War because of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, Atlanta in fact has so much more to offer than memories of ancient conflicts. The capital of the south-eastern state of Georgia, and popularly known as the Big Peach, Hotlanta or A-Town, Atlanta was a centre for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
Because General Sherman burned everything to the ground except the churches and hospitals, very little survives from before the Civil War, and most of the city’s landmark buildings are from the 20th century, including the modernist High Museum and the many high-rise buildings downtown. One of the oldest buildings to survive is the Goodwin House, on Peachtree St. which dates back to the 1830s, Ashley Oaks mansion on College Street, gives a real sense of what life here may have been like in the days before the Civil War.
Atlanta was the hometown of Martin Luther King, Jnr and his childhood home on Auburn Avenue in the sweet Auburn district is home to the Martin Luther King, Jnr National Historic Site. The Presidential Library and Museum of another of Georgia’s famous sons – Jimmy Carter – are on Freedom Parkway. The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum is on Peachtree Street, the main street of the city, which is now also home to many of the largest office buildings and shopping malls, as well as one of the best buildings in the city, the Fox Theatre.
Some of the earliest remnants of the population of the area can be seen in the ancient village site of the Etowah Indian Mounds and the Ocmulgee National Monument, while early colonial history can be explored at the Fort King George and Fort Morris State Historic States.
Atlanta has a reputation as being a green city because of its tree-lined streets, but there are also open green spaces such as the Stone Mountain State Park, Grant Park, Seminole Park and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
