ABOUT THE CITY OF CHICAGO:Once synonymous with Prohibition-era gangsters, Chicago is now better known for its famous architecture, wonderful food and amazing shopping. At the far south-western tip of Lake Michigan, it has long been an important port city, and is now one of the United States’ chief commercial centres. The birthplace of Frank Lloyd Wright, it has dozens of his early buildings, as well as some designed by his teacher, Louis Sullivan and Mies van der Rohe, among others. Three of the tallest buildings in America are here: the iconic Sears Tower, the John Hancock Center and Aon Center and the skyline as viewed across the river or from the lake is spectacular.
Chicago is a city of neighbourhoods, each with its own special character and charm: from the pretty Ukrainian village and its stunning traditional churches to the bustle of Chinatown and the villagy atmosphere of Greektown.
Shoppers have a wealth of choices, from Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile to the Navy Pier – the latter is also a great place for foodies, as is Greektown. Culture lovers are spoiled: the Art Institute of Chicago has one of the world’s best collections, particularly of Impressionist paintings, while the Museum of Contemporary Art has more modern works. There are museums dedicated to history, natural history, Mexican fine art, science and industry and almost everything else you can think of. Music varies from the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra to the independent rock and rave scenes – Chicago also saw the birth of house and hip-hop, but is perhaps best known as the home of Chicago blues and soul, gospel and jazz.
For such a large city, Chicago has a wealth of open spaces , including many lakeside parks and beaches. Lake Michigan itself is a popular playground, especially with scuba divers who can explore the many wrecks that litter the lakefloor close to the shoreline.
Chicago is one of America’s most popular tourist destinations, and if you visit, you’ll understand just why.
