ABOUT THE CITY OF MIAMI:Toward the south of Florida, and the gateway to both the Everglades and the Florida Keys, Miami is one of the most rapidly growing cities in America, with a skyline that is fast going to rival Chicago and New York.
With a large proportion of residents from Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean, Latin music rings through the air here, and the city is regarded as one of the club capitals of the world. There is also a rich bar culture, including the world famous Tobacco Road.
Miami’s unique cultural mix means that it also has a unique food heritage and is home to the ‘Nuevo Latino’, a mix of Caribbean, Latin American and European cooking styles using local produce. It is also known as Floribbean.
A more poignant monument to people who have come here from farther south is the Freedom Tower, once newspaper offices, it later became a processing centre for refugees from Cuba and now holds a small museum about their life in America. It is also a beautiful building.
Contrary to popular report, it does rain here, and wet days are ideal to visit the Miami Museum of Science or the Miami Children’s Museum, while other family attractions include Parrot Jungle Island, the Seaquarium and Miami MetroZoo.
Miami is not a place for those who want a quiet, relaxing break. Going to the beach is more about seeing and being seen than about sunbathing. There are almost as many aspiring models and actors here as in Los Angeles. However, its sheer vibrancy and joie de vivre make it a place not to be missed.
