If you are looking planning a holiday in Cala Galdana, Menorca, the following information may help by giving you an overview of the resort and the surrounding area.
One of Menorca’s most beautiful and ecologically important coves happens to be one of the most developed. Thirty years ago, there was not even a road here, now there are hotels, apartments and villas, and dozens of restaurants and bars.
Cala Galdana takes its name from the Arab word for the local river. A wide arc of gold sand, bounded by wooded cliffs and an green/blue sea, Cala Galdana holidays are popular thanks to a unique micro-climate with higher temperatures and lower winds than the surrounding calas. The Barranc dAlgendar flows into the sea here, its mouth widened to form a marina for small boats. A footbridge across the stream leads to a rocky outcrop, almost an island, and a spectacularly sited bar-restaurant where you dine on a terrace directly overlooking the sea. The stream flows throughout the year and is the most dramatic of the barrancs in Menorca.
For the best views of the entire bay, follow the signs to Mirador de Sa Punta on the eastern cliffs, close to the start of the walk to Cala Mitjana. You can also climb up here from the steps at the eastern end of the beach. Cala Mitjana is a popular beach and the more adventurous can swim into some of the caves or leap from the cliffs into the water. The conditions here are also good for snorkelling.
Cala Galdana is a good place to visit in mid-season as a base for walks along the gorge or to some of the quieter beaches in both directions along the coast. High season Cala Galdana holidays are perfect for families – facilities for children, the swimming is safe, and there are good shady walks for adults. There are also numerous activities to enjoy on Cala Galdana holidays. You can rent windsurfing and snorkelling equipment, pedaloes and motorboats, learn to sail or scuba-dive, or take a boat ride along the coast for a picnic at a peaceful cove.
