If you planning a holiday to Playa de Santiago in La Gomera, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort and the surrounding area and help you in selecting from our range of accommodation in the resort.
Situated on the south coast of La Gomera, a holiday to Playa de Santiago will mean a holiday in one of the main tourist centres on La Gomera and is the home of the island’s only golf course as well as a pebbly beach. It is, according to statistics, the sunniest spot on the island. Although technically the second largest resort on the island, it remains a tiny harbour town where only the presence of a few extra restaurants suggests tourism on any scale.
The beaches at Playa de Santiago, although a mixture of sand and pebble, are amongst the best on the island (other good beaches are at Valle Gran Rey and San Sebastian). The fishing harbour provides protection from the open ocean and therefore allows for safe swimming, even for children. The beautifully clean and clear waters make snorkelling an unimaginable delight as tropical coloured fish swim right into the shallow waters.
Santiago beach has a promenade lined with restaurants that offer a good choice of fish dishes. One can also see the vestiges of times gone by in the small boats laying on the beach or anchored in the new quay.
If you are on your Playa de Santiago holidays on the 16 July, they celebrate the Fiesta Virgen del Carmen which is the largest of the celebrations for the patron saint of fishermen and sailors [also held in Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera – Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife]and the celebrations usually include a procession of boats.
The hotel which turned Playa de Santiago into a fully-fledged resort is the 4 Star Jardin Tecina Hotel which is in a magnificent setting, perched on a cliff above the resort. This self-contained hotel has over 400 rooms, five pools and restaurants, four bars, a spa and extensive sports facilities – including tennis, squash and an 18-hole golf course.
You will need to fly to Tenerife Sur – TFS and then by boat to La Gomera with taxi from the port to Playa de Santiago. Flight time from the UK : Approximately 4 hours.
