If you are planning a holiday to Valle Gran Rey [Valley of the Kings] in La Gomera, the following information may help by giving you an overview on the resort and surrounding area as well as helping you to chose from our range of accommodation in this resort.
Valle Gran Rey, located in the south west of La Gomera, is one of the most impressive and beautiful ravines in the island. Here the Gomera islanders have created a unique landscape by transforming the hillsides into terraces to grow crops and tropical fruits. As you descend into the valley down the dramatic mountainside, clusters of little red-roof houses and groups of Canarian palm trees provide stunning scenery.
Throughout Valle Gran Rey the atmosphere is very authentic Canarian, without the feeling you are in a package holiday resort. In fact, Gomeran tourism in the modern sense had its beginnings in here, albeit in humble circumstances as those in search of an alternative lifestyle were attracted by the valley’s wild appearance, its rows of tiny white-washed houses and its mountain crests and steeply terraced slopes.
Where the valley meets the sea it opens out into a bay with banana plantations and a few black sand beaches. Here, Las Vueltas, a small La Gomeran fishing port with a thriving fishing harbour, offers a good selection of shops, banks, a fitness centre, local bars and restaurants serving fresh fish.
The tropical orchard Argaga tropical fruit garden is a 15 minute walk south of Vueltas . Originally developed by enthusiasts as an organic garden for fruits and flowers, visitor interest has lead to the orchard being opened for frequent, pleasantly informal tours [in English on request]. These concentrate on sampling around a dozen of the exotic fruits grown here, accompanied by information on their cultivation.
Apart from excellent natural La Gomera scenery to explore (either walking, trekking or cycling) on your holiday to Valle Gran Rey, you can take a boat trip from Las Vueltas to watch the dolphins playing in their natural Atlantic habitat or to view the dramatic rock formations and cliffs of La Gomera’s coastline.
Some of the best views of the town and ravines can be found at Mirador del Santo and further south, there is Mirador Cesar Manrique, where there is also a restaurant.
If you are in Valle Gran Rey holidays on the 16 July, they celebrate the Fiesta Virgen del Carmen which is the largest of the celebrations for the patron saint of fishermen and sailors [also held in Playa de Santiago, La Gomera – Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife]and the celebrations usually include a procession of boats.
You will need to fly to Tenerife Sur – TFS and then by boat to La Gomera with taxi from the port to Valle Gran Rey. Flight time from the UK : Approximately 4 hours.
