If you are planning your holidays to Bajamar, the following information may help by giving you an overview of the resort and the surrounding area.
A Bajamar holiday will see you based in a more remote and relaxed resort than the south’s more brash centres, and is well suited to those looking for a longer stay; As a result it still attracts visitors who return here faithfully year after year. Like the more go-ahead Puerto de la Cruz, Bajamar has only a modest black beach. Coupled with strong currents, constant breezes and high surf, this means that most swimming and bathing is done in the comfort of your Bajamar hotel or municipal man-made rock pools at the seashore lido which are replenished by the Atlantic Ocean.
Bajamar means “Down by the Sea” and is among Tenerife’s oldest resorts in the north of the island.
Although once a small fishing village and where sugar cane was cultivated, Bajamar lacks a real centre. Instead it has a long promenade and a network of streets to the rear, all lined with the usual medley of bars, restaurants and shops. These are rarely crowded – part of the its charm – though considerable amounts of money are being invested in the future of Bajamar. The resulting refurbishment and new polish may well alter the towns traditional appeal. The high coastal cliffs and the soaring peaks of Monte de las Mercedes provide a scenic backdrop for the numerous apartments and hotels in Bajamar.
Once here, don’t forget to visit Bajamar’s saltwater pools. The pools are continuously fed by the Atlantic Ocean. The seawater splashes over the pool edges – occasionally crashing over – with people near the edge being sprayed by the waves. There are 2 large pools and a small one for children. The water at the beach is much calmer!
