Formentera

Getting To and Around Formentera

The beautiful island of Formentera is located in the Spanish Balearic Islands off the south coast of the island of Ibiza.

Getting to Formentera

Formentera does not have its own aiport and can therefore be an experience in itself reaching your final destination. You will need to make your way to Ibiza Town in order to catch a ferry or hydrofoil over to La Savina in Formentera.  This will take between 30-65 minutes (the hydrofoil being the quicker of the two). However, you may be able to find a local boat operator in your resort who makes a daily drip over to the island.

It is important to note that ferries do not operate throughout the night, therefore you will need to bear this in mind when booking your flight to Ibiza.  An alternative, if you are only able to obtain a night arrival, is to spend a night in a hotel in Ibiza Town and then catch an early ferry or hydrofoil over to Formentara. The same will apply to your eturn flight. Try not to book an early morning flight out of Ibiza.

Getting Around Formentera

As far as getting around Formentera is concerned, you will be able to rent a bicycle fairly easily from the ferry port at La Savina.  With your bike, and a Green Routes map (obtainable from the Tourist Office), you can spend time making your way around the island. It might be worth while spending a little bit more to rent a mountain bike.

Always a good option are the buses which are both inexpensive and punctual. Again, you will be able to obtain a timetable from the Tourist Office located in La Savina. Please bear in mind that there are fewer buses runnng on a Sunday than on other days during the week.

If you are in a hurry, or just don’t fancy catching a bus or renting a car, or bike, then a taxi is your best alternative. Taxis are available from La Savina and can take you anywhere on the island. A taxi is available when showing a green light and can be hailed on the street  – not just from a designated taxi rank. The only time you might find you will need to wait for an available taxi will be during the main summer months during the evening.  This is when tourists want to get back to their hotels or apartments after an evening out.

Don’t let the fact that the island hasn’t an airport put you off a Formentera holiday – this just adds to the charm of this peaceful island.
